How To Replace a Vacuum Belt

By knowing the basics about vacuum belt replacement, vacuum owners can save time and money if they know how to properly replace them due to over stretching, belts wearing out or even breaking.

Luckily, changing a vacuum belt is a very simple repair on most vacuum cleaners. Vacuum owners should never have to take their machine to a shop just for a belt replacement.

The first step in this (and any) part replacement is to accurately order the needed part for the repair.

Vacuum Belt Replacement Steps

Each specific vacuum style and model is different, so belt replacement steps can differ a little from one to the next. Despite these differences, all vacuum belt replacements share similar qualities.

This article's instructions are generalized so that they can help do-it-yourself vacuum owners with their belt change repairs, regardless of the vacuum type or model.

We use a common upright style vacuum for our belt replacement demonstration, The Hoover U5458-900 WindTunnel Supreme.

This repair can take less than five minutes on most vacuums, especially once an owner is familiar with their model.

1. Access the vacuum belt and brushroll area.

Vacuum belts work to spin a vacuum's brush roller and/or, on some self-propelled models, to turn a vacuum's wheels.

Whatever the style of vacuum, this repair will take place in the machine's brushroll area.

For most vacuum cleaners, opening the brushroll area just means removing a bottom plate on the similar to the one pictured above on the Hoover WindTunnel.

In the case of our demonstration model, removing the bottom plate only involves unscrewing four Phillips screws.

2. Remove the brush roller and the old belt.

Now that the bottom plate is off the old (or broken) belt will come out of the vacuum easily.

Before removing the old belt and the brush roll, take a look at how they are arranged in the vacuum and how they connect to each other.

The belt on our Hoover WindTunnel pictured above is a flat type vacuum belt, held between the motor shaft and the brush roller by its elastic tension.

First, pull the brushroll out of the vacuum and slide it out of the belt loop. Then, remove the other end of the vacuum belt from the motor shaft.

3. Install the new vacuum belt on the motor shaft and brush roller.

Heads up! If your vacuum model takes a round or flat vacuum belt type, that means that the belt is held between the motor shaft and the brushroller with tension. As a consequence, the new belt may seem too small for the vacuum.

This is most-likely normal and to be expected. Double check that you have the right part for your vacuum just in case, but be aware that round and flat vacuum belt types stretch a great deal. Geared and v-belts also stretch, but not nearly as much.

The old belt you are replacing will most likely appear much bigger when held up to the new belt on account of all the stretching it has gone through with vacuum use.

First, slide the new vacuum belt around the vacuum motor shaft. Once it's on the shaft, thread the brush roll through the other end of the belt.

4. Install the brush roller with the belt correctly positioned on it.

Whatever the vacuum style, the idea is to return the brushroll and belt to their original positions before closing up the vacuum housing.

For vacuums that use round and flat belts, a little muscle is needed to pull the brushroll into position with that unstretched new belt on it. The best way to do this for most vacuums is to install the brushroll one side at a time, starting with the side opposite the belt-side of the brushroll.

On our demonstration vacuum, the side of the brushroll opposite the belt has notch that fits into the vacuum. After installing that side of the brush, a good pull on the belt side of the roller will snap it right into place (watch your fingers).

This is actually much easier if done standing over the vacuum with it lying on the ground. A carefully placed foot can provide the right counterweight.

5. Reassemble the vacuum.

Return the bottom plate of the vacuum and/or any other housing pieces removed to access the brushroll area. For the WindTunnel, that just means returning those four Phillips screws and bottom plate removed earlier.

This repair is now complete. Depending on the vacuum belt type, your new vacuum agitator belt can last you months to years before another replacement.

New Line of Tools from Milwaukee!

The company’s pedigree has always been power tools for plumbers, electricians, and HVAC professionals. But now the makers of the Sawzall are branching out with hand tools.

Milwaukee Electric Tool just announced a new line of hand tools that will be launched in April. The first batch of tools includes a screwdriver, a pair of utility knives, and a drywall saw. The 11 in 1 ($15) screwdriver includes the company’s ECX bits, which are mean to drive the specialty screws found in electrical boxes, outlets, and conduit couplers and includes the usual cast of characters: two Philips bits, two slotted, two ECX bits, and three nut drivers. The last two features speak directly to electricians: a built in wire stripper on just above the handle and a hole to bend wires up to 12 gauge before hooking up outlet boxes. The new utility knives ($15 and $17) are designed to be opened faster, with thin bodies that make storage easier. These too have an integrated wire stripper. The drywall saw ($15) incorporates holes along in the 6-inch blade that act as a rasp to expand or smooth cut outs.

There are many brands, sizes, and blades to consider when you're looking at band saws. Craftsman, Delta, and Lenox are among the most popular names for home workshops. It's not necessary to look beyond these "big three."

The first thing to consider when buying a band saw may be your budget. The good news is, you can probably find a sturdy and reliable saw in your price range.

DELTA

Delta's prices are among the lowest for basic, durable band saws. Their designs change very little from year to year; it can be difficult to tell a 1950s Delta saw from a more recent model.

For clean, simple cuts, Delta saws get rave reviews from many owners. From assembly to set up, Delta is a good starter saw, and a solid choice for professional use on a budget.

There are some shortcomings with Delta products. They're not as easy to clean as Craftsman saws, and Deltas are known for generating a lot of sawdust. Other brands offer good dust collection systems, but with most Delta saws, you'll need to keep a broom and dustpan handy for regular clean-ups.

Many pros recommend immediately replacing Delta blades. But, not all band saw blades are interchangeable. In fact, not all Delta blades will fit Delta saws. Be sure to consult your Delta manual. It's even better to ask at the hardware store, describing the specific kinds of projects you have in mind.

Smaller Delta band saws, such as the 9-inch, do not earn the favorable reviews of the larger, more expensive models. Especially if you're using the saw for 45-degree cuts for frames or other home projects requiring a miter gauge, be sure that your saw comes with this attachment. Smaller Deltas such as the 9-inch--and a few larger ones--won't always fit attachments from other companies.

If you want to make complex cuts with hard woods such as oak, walnut, or mahogany, the 14-inch Delta is a smart choice. But, for simple cuts and if you're a soft wood such as pine, the 9-inch may be all that you need.

In professional shops where the saw will be in use four or more hours every day, the motors in the smaller Deltas may not be rugged enough for hard, daily use. But, for most hobbyists, the Delta motor is more than adequate.

Otherwise, Deltas earn generally high marks for being rugged, accurate band saws, regardless of price. Their more expensive saws--above $800--are likely to exceed your expectations. But, even at the $100 level, many hobbyists are happy with Delta products.

If you're buying a Delta band saw from an advertisement, be sure that the items shown in the ad come with your saw. In some cases, those are optional attachments, not included.

Also, many of the larger Delta saws offer an optional wheel set. This is a smart investment if you may be working with big pieces of wood that need extra support or more elbow room when you're working.

In general, Delta band saws are a fine choice if you're a beginning woodworker or have a limited budget.

CRAFTSMAN

If you're able to spend a little more than the price of most Delta band saws, Craftsman is an ideal choice. In fact, during a sale and with your Craftsman Club card, you can find Craftsman band saws for the same price as their Delta counterparts.

You can join the Craftsman Club at no charge at any Sears store that carries their Craftsman tools. In addition to a free newsletter, Craftsman Club members qualify for special sale days, and other members-only offers. If you're shopping for a band saw, the savings can be significant.
