THIS OLD HOUSE MAGAZINE CALLS MAKITA'S NEW LS1216L A "MUST-OWN MITER SAW"
Posted By the_tool On 1:52 PMMakita has a well-earned reputation for making innovative, high-performance power tools, and its brand-new Model LS1216L Compound Miter Saw is no exception. In fact, this may just be the very best tool of its kind that I've ever seen.
To start, this is a 12-inch dual sliding compound miter saw, meaning that its 12-inch-diameter saw blade rotates left and right for cutting miters, and tilts both left and right for cutting bevels. To execute a compound-angle cut, simply adjust both the miter and bevel settings.
And the saw carriage, which includes the motor and blade, slides on four--not just two--steel rods for increased accuracy and stability.
This professional-duty saw also features a 15-amp motor, laser, dust-collection bag, hold-down clamps and easy-to-adjust sliding fence system.
But where this new Makita saw really shines is in its ability to keep cutting when other miter saws fall short.
The LS1216L boasts the largest cutting capacity of any miter saw in its class. It can crosscut boards up to 15 inches wide, and cut 45-degree miters up to 10 1/2 inches.
And if you plan to use the saw to cut crown molding, Makita's got you covered. This saw can cut 8-inch crown when nested against the fence and saw table, or 6 1/2-inch crown when held flat against the fence.
The miter capacities are pretty impressive, too: 52 degrees to the left and 60 degrees to the right. And, of course, there are positive stops at the most-used miter angles: zero, 15, 22.5, 31.6, and 45 degrees left and right.
The LS1216L retails for $679, but can be found for about $599, and in my opinion, it's worth every penny.
